What you’ll see at the bottom of this post appeals to the hero in all of us. If you notice, there are several bystanders that can be heard screaming about the fire and the fact that there is still someone else inside the house. Everyone is really concerned, yet nobody takes action. Well, nobody until this nameless guy.
He shows up out of nowhere and selflessly runs into the home rescuing the stranger.
Now I doubt that he knew at the time that death from fire is the third leading cause of fatal home injury in the US according to the CDC. About 85% of US fire deaths happen in homes. The leading cause of death related to fire is smoke. Victims pass out due to a depleted oxygen supply and fall to the floor.
They are long dead before the fire ever starts to consume them. As far as the culprit for most of these residential fires that cause so much chaos, well that would be the kitchen. Cooking is the primary culprit when it comes to fires inside the home.
To sum it up and make a sobering point, someone dies in a fire about every 169 minutes in the United States. (more…)

That is about every three hours, or 8 people per day. That number should make us all take pause and be careful the next time we decide to heat up some cooking oil to have a big family fish fry. Make sure your fryer is safe to operate and that you keep your temperatures in check. Also, keep a kitchen extinguisher handy. Make sure everyone in your house knows where it is and how to use it. Safety is the number one concern.
Yet here, safety does not seem to be on the hero’s mind. This guy does not think about that at all. He selflessly runs in and rescues the man from his burning home. The rescued gentleman is safe, and the ladies all breathe a sigh of relief thanks to the stranger who took action. The rescuer even asks if there is anyone else inside and asks whether or not 911 has been called. You would think that he was a retired firefighter or has had some experience doing this sort of thing in the past. However, nothing could be further from the truth. As it turns out, the stranger has a name.
He is Tom Artiaga. He’s a truck driver who just happened to be in the area and stopped to see how he could contribute. He was later honored on the Jimmy Kimmel show where he received Disneyland tickets for his entire family as well as a pass to a Dodgers game presented by none other than Tommy Lasorda. Tom even gets to throw out the first pitch. Pretty cool for a guy who just happened to be in the area and decided to make something happen. I think we could all give a head nod to this guy for his bravery, and truth be told, we are probably just a little bit jealous. I mean come one, which one of us has not dreamed of being a nameless knight in shining armor?
